It doesn't seem possible that it's 18 years since I attended the very first training session of Chesham Women’s rugby team. I was invited to join Flo Llewellyn the first Captain and her partner Chris the coach, in their quest to start a new Women's team at the club.
The inaugural game was against Marlow on Chesham Moor. Unfortunately the “scoreline did not reflect the game”, a phrase we used regularly after the result was a close 72 – 4 to Marlow. I am proud to say that I scored that first try (only four points were awarded back then) which was to become the first of only a few in my rugby career.
In those early days, survival was achieved due to the fact that many other women's teams including Hemel Hempstead and Old Abbotstonians folded. Any interested players from these teams were welcomed to Chesham and a stronger squad gradually developed. It has been a major achievement that Chesham Women has become such a well-established and successful team when so many others did not survive. Credit for that must be given to the players, committee members, Club Members and coaches that have worked so hard to ensure our success.
Over the years the team has been made up of players of all nationalities, abilities, ages, experiences and from all walks of life. Players are always welcomed whether they are in their 40's without any prior knowledge or understanding of the game, or whether they have come from the minis section progressing on to the senior game. The team has gone from strength to strength and our achievements include many league victories, winning both the Southern and National Cup, and the National 7's plate competition on two occasions.
I am very proud of all Chesham Women's achievements over the past 18 years, however, the people I have met, the close friends I have made have been the most important aspects of what the club means to me, not to mention the good social life!
