28th January 2012, Chesham - Chesham Minis show their value of their equal approach with strong results throughout the age groups.

The growing success of the mini rugby programme at Chesham Stags rugby club was shown as, for the first time, Chesham fielded two teams at Under 7, Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10 level in a triangular set of matches at Wycombe against the home side and Farnham Common-based Drifters. Rather than stream the youngsters into separate A and B sides, Chesham’s philosophy is to combine abilities to ensure opportunities for all and that each player gets a game.

“We think at that age, it’s important that children enjoy the game and play with a variety of different abilities” explained Jane Morris, Chair of the Minis and Juniors Section at Chesham Rugby Club. “For us, the most crucial thing is that no child is left on the sidelines or made to feel second best.”

The results in terms of numbers on the pitch and scores speak beat testament to this approach. The Under 7s showed the way with four wins out of six and two narrow losses by just a single try. Player of the day, Jack Feinson shone with an impressive haul of seven tries but the performances were built on a solid defensive performance by the whole team.

Not to be outdone, the Under 8s also won four out of six including a notable 14 – 9 win against a strong Wycombe A side with Ben Blackburne in unstoppable form running in four tries. In his debut for the club, Henry James scored and also put in a commendable defensive performance in his first outing. Top gun was Alex Rutter who racked up an imposing total of nine tries.

The Under 9 team’s results followed a similar pattern of four wins out of six. Pick of the wins was a gritty performance against a fast Drifters A side when the Stags pegged back an early Drifters lead then put in a unflinching defensive effort to seal a 3 – 2 victory with Aaron Stewart scoring twice in a total haul of six tries for the day.
Having struggled for numbers earlier in the season, the Under 10s fielded two sides for the first time and managed a win and a draw. Alfie Bouchier led the forwards by example working tirelessly to gain ground and win ball for the backs.

The Under 12s made their traditional slow start against Wycombe A but powered back to beat both Drifters and rack up 40 points against a Wycombe B side. Player of the day was Harry Pawlak who backed up a solid defense with a hat-trick in the final game.
